On a cool summer night almost 20 years ago, I stood on the side of a desert mountain, starting my meditation journey. You can read the whole story here, but today I want to share the meditation resources that help me more fully embrace my ADHD brain and life.
Just for fun, I am sharing them in the order in which I discovered them.
1. The Meditation Transformation by Jennifer Brooks is a free kindle book that was recommended by a friend of mine. Brooks’ scientific explanations describe how meditation decreases stress and increase weight loss. Favorite selections from this book include 1) the benefits of meditation, 2) meditation and weight loss, and 3) how meditation changes your brain. For some reason, this short, free book lit a small fire of motivation under me to get started meditating.
2. Youtube videos from the Honest Guys The idea of trying to sit and “clear my mind” gave me a headache. But two minutes? I could handle that. These two minute guided videos took away the overwhelm. This was a great way for me to start. Thanks Honest Guys!
3. Headspace App I took advantage of the free version of Headspace that has 10 meditations running 10 minutes each. You can do them as many times as you please. I now have the upgraded version and have used it several times per week for almost two years. I have amassed over 64 hours of meditating on this app! This one-minute video by Headspace describes exactly how I benefit from meditation.
4. Tara Brach I heard about Tara Brach from bestselling author Tim Ferriss. This smile meditation brings a world of calm to my mind as well as my body.
5. Selfcompassion.org Dr. Kristin Neff runs the website selfcompassion.org. I go away from her meditations feeling like someone gave me a massage. A kindness massage! This is what the world needs more of! Kindness massages.
Do you know what I love best about meditation?
In this
moment I’m meditating,
I’m good enough.
The moment is good enough.
My skin is good enough.
My family is good enough.
The world is good enough.
I can enjoy just being.
